grip shift indicator stuck
 

On my sunday bike, 2008 C'dale Bad Boy disc, the little red finger gear indicator has been stuck on '9' for couple weeks. It shifts perfectly. I just look down to see what gear I'm in, but the indicator doesn't move. It's a SRAM X.7 (I think) 9 speed. I have not taken it apart. My ?s- Can it be repaired? Is it worth the bother?

If the shifter still works, I wouldn't bother. There are a lot of tiny bits in the shifter to mess about with.

Who needs the indicator anyhow? It's just a "nice to have" feature in today's shifters. God knows how folks did it back in the day of thumbie friction shifters. Oh wait... you just rode and shifted when you needed to. You don't need an indicator to tell you which gear you're in. When gear indicators get to road shifters I will have lost faith in humanity...

Dude, we passed that milestone a long time ago - remember the inline indicators? Also, Shimano FlightDeck computers have indicators built in. Nice feature, IMHO.

Good advice though, I wouldn't open that can of worms for the sake of the indicator (unless you already have a spare lying around...)

I'm not familiar with Shimano stuff, much less roadie components. My only experience is with Campy bits and no indicators there.

Yeah, the inline stuff wasn't pretty.
