Clicking Free Hub

My drivetrain started clicking randomly a couple hundred miles ago, and it got steadily worse, so now I'm trying to sleuth out what the problem is. After replacing the cassette and chain to no avail, my attention turned to the free hub. I noticed today, after removing the cassette, than I can replicate the noise by turning the free hub clockwise, or into drive mode. Something's slipping in there when drive pressure is applied to the axle.

What's going on?

It's a Novotech hub, I think the 2SB. I'm having trouble getting the free hub off to take a look inside. The wheel bearings are sealed. I don't think they're the problem.

I managed to get the free hub off and inspected the ratchet mechanism. Everything looks OK. The retaining ring is intact and the pawls all look alright-no chips or broken edges or obvious signs of wear. I checked out the gear inside the hub and the teeth all look to be intact. I did notice, before cleaning eveything off, that the ratchet pawls were a little stiff and sluggish. The hub has about 5K miles on it and I've never greased it, so the grease was a little sticky and gunky. After cleaning, it was tougher to replicate the clicking when turning the free hub clockwise. So, I don't know. I think I'm going to clean everything real good, grease it all up and take 'er for another spin. See what happens.
