is this a manufacturing mistake?? derail question

I just got a new surly frame today, and looking around at the top of the toptube i couldnt find any of the braze ons for the derailieur cables. take a look at the picture and you will see what i mean. I seems to just go from the lever straight to the BB. any ideas??

Your frame has mounts for the older style downtube shifters which form thier own effective cable points. To use the on the bar systems such as modern cockpits are, there are a few types of bold on cable guides that form what the braze ons would have been. I picked up a set at my LBS for 5 bucks, he had a bin of them.

Here's a pic of the left side cable guide. They just slip over and a securing bolt holds the nicely in place. Very common and easy to get. Ask any LBS for a pair.

The bolt on cable guides were included in a new set of Ultegra STI shifters I bought recently.

The downtube bosses are used as cable guides and the mounting point for barrell adjusters. My Cannondale uses this system. It's not ucommon and workes just fine. A complete Shimano groupset incluedes downtube boss barrell adjusters.
