REAR Derailleur question

So my allez got stolen and I replaced it with an old trek 1420 that was given to me. Great bike but I have been swaping out old parts every chance I get.

Heres the Drivetrain breakdown. shimano everything. 7 speed HG. 105 index downtube shifters. Then a Dieore Triple crank and deore long cage rear derailleur.

The stuff is kinda bulky and I would like to replace it

I have an old 105 9 speed derailleur that I was going to try and set up and limit it to the 7 speeds and replace the triple crank with like a shimano DA or 600 crank. And approprate FD.

I would like to keep this as cheap as possible... And Would like to just keep the DT shifters. I cannot afford to upgrade the Derailleurs and Then get new sti shifters. I dont want to replace the whole group. Just bits and pieces.

Will I loose the Indexing ability if I run the 9 speed derailleur

Would I be better off replacing the Rear Derailleur with an old shimano 600 or 105. 7 speed derailleur and approprate crank. Will that even work.

Sorry if this post is a little disorganized but I have many questions. Thanks.

Shimano rear derailleurs (with a couple of exceptions that aren't an issue here) are indifferent to the number of cassette "speeds" and only do what the shifters tell them to. Your 105 9-speed rd will work fine with your 7-speed dt shifters and cassette.
