How do you know which brakes will be suitable for your fork?

How do you know which brakes will be suitable for your fork?
I just tried to fit my new Shimano 57mm drop caliper brake on to thr fork, but the nut that is meant to fit in behind the fork to attach to the bolt of the brake (Thats a mouthful I know, but I cant find out what the actual names are of parts.) Does not fit into the whole.
Is it therefore more likely this fork requires cantilever brakes then, and since I obviously dont know the difference in forks in road bikes, how can I tell which kind of brake suits which kind of fork?
Or should i just whip out my drill and make the whole bigger?

On a fork intended for cantilever brakes there will be specific bosses on each leg. Is this a metal or carbon fork? How did you know that 57mm would be the correct brake to get? I think it will be OK to drill clearance for the sleeve nut on a metal fork (rear side only) but on a carbon fork be a bit more wary.

Pics?? what kind and year is your bike? perhaps you need a front brake that mounts with a regular nut rather than a recessed nut.

For caliper brakes there are two issues to consider. Reach: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/calipers.html#reach and whether the brake uses an external or recessed nut.
Forks/frames meant for cantilever brakes have canti studs.

Unless you know for sure what you are doing I woukld never recomend taking a drill any where near a bike.

@fr333zin : I knew I needed a 57mm reach brake simply by process of elimination. I had a short reach caliper from an older bike. Tried to fit it, but took it off immediately when i saw it was not the right one. But since I did that in such a rush, as it were, I didnt bother checking the if the recess nut even fitted. So, ordered the new brakes, and thats when i realised wtf? Never encountered that with any of my other bike builds.
I basically asked the question about cantilever brakes then more because I thought I was losing my mind, and the world turned upside down. Even though, I knew it was not so. But good to know anyway.
Ultimatelly it was stupid problem, but I had it. Sorted now though. Hope others will see this before they go and by brakes for an old bike.
