Carb cleaner to free up shimano shifter?

Carb cleaner to free up shimano shifter?
Anyone try using it as a degreaser to free up the grease in there? How about things like Easy-off instead of WD40?

The Easy-Off I know about is oven cleaner; it is a strong alkali and will attack the aluminum parts of the shifters. Don't do it, stick with WD-40 or a light aerosol white grease which contains some solvent as well as lubricant. The idea is to loosen and soften the grease inside, not to wash it out.
