Vuelta axle too wide

Vuelta axle too wide
I removed the Vuelta wheels from my wife's Norco to put on her Motobecane, but the back axle is too wide.
Will the shorter axle from a wheel of a different make fit, or will i have to buy the correct part?
I didn't want to take it apart without asking the experts.

If you used a shorter axle, you also have to use shorter spacers and re-dish the wheel.

Yes, you can narrow this hub by switching or shortening the axle and reducing the width of the left side spacer. (replace with narrower spacer. You can't change anything on the right side because the cassette width is fixed.
That's the easy part, probelm and the harder part is that the rim won't e centered on the hub anymore. That means wheel work to re-dish the wheel toward the right to get it back to center.
The other option, if it's an older steel Motobecane is to spread the rear triangle to match the wheel. If it's only for temporary use, and the difference is 6mm or so you can simply spring the frame open and mount the wheel. If you're staying with this wheel long term, you might want to spread the frame permanently. That's surprisingly easy, and you'll find instructions with a quick search of the net. Start with "spreading frame, Sheldon Brown"

I'll look into a new axle and re-dishing the wheel.
I'm not against spreading the triangle. Its probably the last wheel-set it will have in our lifetime.
