FSA ISIS Bottom Bracket repair
 

I am looking for instructions on how to take apart and replace the cartridge bearings in an FSA Platinum Pro Ti bottom bracket. When I took the bottom bracket out and showed it to my local shop they said you could not take it apart and I'd need to replace the entire bottom bracket. I did buy two new bottom brackets ( tandem bike ), but I would like to repair the old ones if possible. FSA's WEB site no longer shows these bottom brackets. I did request help on their WEB site, but received no answer( it's been a couple of weeks). Thanks for any help or advice.

A while ago, I took apart a worn out Truvative ISIS bottom bracket because I was curious. To get it apart required a Hydralic press and fixture that captured the body. The spindle pressed from the Drive side to the non-drive side, taking the NDS bearing with it. Then the drive side bearings could be tapped out.

Yours could be a little different, but if you take it to a local auto repair ship, they can probably press it apart fairly easily. Then once you get the right bearings, you will have to press it back together again.

I've replaced the bearings on an ISIS bottom bracket without anything more special then a deep socket 31mm socket. The rings by the spines on the ISIS bottom bracket is what keeps everything together. Bearings can be order from http://www.enduroforkseals.com/id233.html

Disassembling Instructions
1. Remove adjustable cup.

2. Hold the bottom bracket in one hand by the body with the fix cup facing down. With a hammer hit the spindle. This will take some force and a few hits but nothing to crazy. This will remove the top ring, the fix cup and bearing on the fix cup side and the spindle.

3. Place the spindle back into the body of the bb and tap out the other bearing.

Reassembling Instructions

1. Place a new bearing on the fixed cup side of the body. Place an old bearing on top of it and tap the new bearing into the body of the bb. It is important to protect the new bearing with the old bearings. Tapping the new bearing directly can cause damage to the bearing.

2. Insert the spindle into the bb though the new bearing so the ring remaining is on the outside.

3. Place the other new bearing onto the other side, place the old bearing on top of that and with a 31mm socket placed over the spindle tap the bearing into place. To clarify this step. After stacking the two bearings on top of each other, place the socket so it slides over the spindle. Rest the bb on a vise so the already installed bearing are resting visa and the spindle passes through. Tap on the socket until the new bearing is pressed into the bb body.

4. Place the ring on the spindle with the old bearing on top of it and the socket again top of the old bearing. Rest the bb on your workbench and tap the socket until the ring is pressed on.

5. Tap the fix cup on using the socket.

Done! When I first did this I thought about taking picture of the process. Picture are worth a thousand words. Let me know if anything isn't clear and I will try to clarify. After doing this the first time I was surprised how easy it was and that it's generally encouraged to dispose of the bb and replace it with a new one.
