Hybrid suspension fork - what can I replace it with?

My wife has a hybrid style bike with about a 10lb+ suntour suspension fork on the front. It also uses a threaded headset (1 1/8"). Bike was bought new in 2008, so it isn't all that old.

My question...is there anything that I can replace that POS fork with? It doesn't really need to be a suspension fork, either. Currently the bike has V-brakes on it, which are good enough. And it runs normal 700c wheels.

I didn't know if a cyclocross style of fork would be needed with a different headset or if I'd need something else altogether. Hate to just replace the bike as she loves it otherwise, but she could do without the weight of the fork.
