9 speed Shimano cassette on 7 speed hub with Campagnolo shifters...possible?

What a mess this bike is turning out to be!

At the moment I'm on a very tight budget, hence the messy miss-mash. After looking at Sheldon's cassette spacing crib sheet, here, and his article on 7 speed hubs here, it seems this might be possible.

There is a 0.21mm difference between each sprocket of Campagnolo and Shimano 9 speed systems. If I was using 8 of the 9 cogs of a 9 speed cassette then there would be 7 spaces. Multiplying 0.21mm by 7 gives a 1.47mm overshoot by the last cog. That doesn't sound/look like very much, would it shift okay? I don't need instantaneous shifting, but I don't want spontaneous shifting when I'm on the pedals for example!

Check out CTC's Rear Shifting page (the bits won't even have to cross the Atlantic!).

Thanks, very useful link! I didn't take into account shift ratio. Turns out I'll need 7 of the cogs from an 8 speed cassette with the hubub mod on my Shimano rear mech!

Friction shifting is the key to making weird combinations work.
