Gear shifter

I have a 1995 Giant Yukon that my dad gave me. I have mostly fixed it up, but I can't find a replacement gear shifter for the one that is broken. Can anyone help?

Phone Book, Yellow pages, under Bike shops..

There is no 1 'gear shifter' , but a large number of possible items.

take your bike there, so they can see it , I cannot.

Are these "trigger" shifters?
IF so, a common fix is to thoroughly flush with WD-40 or some other solvent IF the problem is failure of the pawl to catch.

No, I opened it up and there were broken pieces inside.

I think this is the only way to go.

If you want to do it yourself, then supply enough information, preferably with pictures, so that someone can help you.

You may not find an exact replacemenmt for a 16 year old shifter, but upgraded replacements are WIDELY available, from budget conscious units to high end. I agree about taking it to a shop if possible (or at least giving pics and info on what exactly is on there),to make sure compatibility isn't an issue...but it wouldn't be overly expensive to upgrade the complete transmission to modern bits at someplace like nashbar.com,or pricepoint.com if you have any kind of budget. Or you could always singlespeed it out using your derailluer as a chain tensioner :)
