B.B. Width question

I measured the width of my MTB bottom bracket shell and it was 2.25 inches. Will it take a standard 68mm bottom bracket? 68mm is 2.68 inches.

bike: Raleigh M80

I'd be for remeasuring your BB shell. My bet is the correct number is 73mm.

I was wrong. I re-measured and the bottom bracket is 2 5/8" wide. Is that 73 mm?

What type of BB are you putting in it?

You will find it easier to use metric for most bike components, as they are designed in Japan / the Far East where this is the measurement standard.

All external MTB BB's are 73mm regardless of the physical length of the BB shell (68 or 73mm), to achive this, spacers are used. Older (Square taper, ISIS & Octalink) came in 68 & 73mm, so you only have choice of those.
