Hello guys, I am new for this forum

(those aren't my photos)

Also I have another question, When I spin pedals on bike, whole Freewheel spins, but wheel is stopped, so may be it is fault of Freewheel and those teeth inside Freewheel?

Hope someone will understand what I mean :D sorry for my bad English

I think they are called pawls.

The idea is when you turn the pedals they engage the sawtooth shaped sections in the rear group and turn the wheel, and if you stop pedalling the rotation of the cassette pushes them out of the way so they push down and spring back up repeatedly, which is what causes the click-click-click sound when you're freewheeling.

They are pawls and may be unique to your freewheel. Check the freewheel mfg site and see if they have a parts list. If they don't engage properly you would have the symptom you describe. Have you tried to reassemble the freewheel with some light lube? Sometimes they just get gunked up.

HillRider 03-18-12 07:32 AM

As above, they are called pawls and allow the freewheel to act as a one way clutch. They lock the outer shell (with the cogs) to the the inner core (attached to the hub) when you pedal but come out of engagement and let the wheel continue to roll when you stop pedaling.

If the reassembled freewheel doesn't work properly, replace it with a new one. For all practical purposes repair parts aren't available and new complete freewheels are so inexpensive that, except as a curiosity, they are rarely repaired or even disassembled for cleaning.

+1 On new freewheel. They can be bought for less than $20. If it was well used consider a new chain at the same time for
$15.

Giorgi 03-18-12 07:49 AM

Thank you all for answers

Finally I found this item on amazon but it is very expensive it's about $20 :(
I think I have also to buy a Freewheel, it isn't that expensive
http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Tourne...2078277&sr=8-1
does this product include pawls? if not, Is there any websites where i can buy pawls for lower price?

You can also check with the Freewheel Spa it is run by a member over in the C&V area, he may have them.

+1 Time is money. Just buy one a new.

As mentioned above pawls and other repair parts for freewheels are not available. A new freewheel includes all of the parts you show plus all new cogs.

So, are you sure that this Freewheel includes pawls?

I don't think so, then price should be $30+

It would not be a freewheel without them. Buying older obscure small parts is sometimes much more expensive than buying a new part.

Also you did not provide a link to the Pawls you found were they shimano? Campagnolo? what quality level? if they Campi FW pawls I would be suprised they were only $20

All freewheels have pawls in them. They don't work otherwise. The clicking or buzzing sound you hear when you coast are the pawls hitting the tops of the teeth in the freewheel body.

And you might want to look again. As of 3/18/12, the freewheel is $12. Do a Google search and you'll find lots of 7 speed freewheels for around $9

LarDasse74 03-18-12 09:24 AM

I have never in my life seen pawls available for sale separately. As mentioned above, freewheels seldom get disassembled - they are usually replaced as the cost for the parts + the effort required to deal with all those tiny balls simply means repairs are not worth the time and effort. THe last freewheel I bought was less than $10 - and yes that is a complete working freewheel with pawls inside.

Are you just trying to rebuild that freewheel or do you have some other project in mind for which you need extra pawls? If so, buying multiple $8 freewheels and stripping them for parts is likely much more cost effective than sourcing and buying loose pawls.

Yes, that freewheel includes pawls. It includes all freewheel parts, is ready to be screwed onto a hub, have a chain wrapped around it and get on the road!

Giorgi 03-18-12 09:41 AM

I decided I will buy Freewheel

thank you guys for advices

These pawls are Campagnolo
http://www.amazon.com/Campagnolo-OS-...2084972&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Campagnolo-Pie...2084972&sr=8-4

second one is $25
but it's price of 3 pack

LesterOfPuppets 03-18-12 10:21 AM

Those pawls won't work in a freewheel. They are for freehub designs only. They are for Fulcrum wheelsets specifically.

These are freewheel pawls. They are used inside freewheels and cassettes to keep the freewheel or cassette from rotating in both directs. They create a ratchet effect that allows the bike's wheel to spin freely in one direction and drive in the other direction. They probably are only available as a part of a complete freewheel or cassette, not separately

The most common cause of forward freewheeling is the pawls aren't engaging in the nooks of the razor-tooth gear in the outer freewheel body. This is caused by dried out oil/grease and dirt that collects in there over time. If you've disassembled the freewheel down to where you can see the pawls (like in your photos), it's not that hard to clean out the gunk from the freewheel-body to allow the pawls to engage. In the base majority of the case, like 99.999%, it is all that's needed to get the freewheel operational again. Then lube it with light oil when you re-assemble. Most of the time, you can just spray cleaner into the gap between the inner & outer body and spin the freewheel to flush the gunk out.

Freewheels with seals between the outer & inner body lasts a lot longer between cleanings. Matter of 20-years versus every 3-6 years. Depending upon your riding environment.
