Cracked Jamis Aurora frame

Local guy is selling off this cracked Jamis Aurora frame.

Do you guys think its worth picking up and fixing? He's open to any offer since he got a new frame on warranty. Just the frame and fork, no parts.

I'd want to build it up for a commuter if I could get it welded for a reasonable price. Then there is the paint.. and finding the parts. I dunno. What do you lot think?

No way. That crack is serious and in a difficult place to repair. Welding an alumiunum bike frame requires more than just the ability to weld. You have to maintain the frame's alignment and then properly heat treat the weld zone to restore the metal properties. Put that frame in the recycle bin.

The Seller is acheap idiot and threat to public safety. If you still need to buy parts your better off buying a complete bike even if you have to get a Walmart (atleast it won't be cracked) or Bikes Direct bike.

Back when I worked in shops it was customary to either send the frame back or in some cases cut out the serial number and give it to the sales rep thereby rendering the frame useless. Dispite this being a second or even thirdhand frame it is a potential lawsuit for Jamis.

I too am surprised that he was allowed to keep the frame. I had a Jamis steel road frame crack on me (chain stay). Jamis replaced the frame under warranty but to get the replacement, the broken frame had to be shipped back to Jamis by an authorized Jamis dealer.

The frame is steel (not aluminum).

That is awful. Do not buy. You can find an intact bicycle frame in a dumpster somewhere. Alternatively, a new budget touring frame can be purchased from onlie retailers for ~$100 or less. See this example at Nashbar.com.

Also, if you don't already have all or at least most of the parts necessary to build a bike from the bare frame, it is going to be more expensive than buying a new complete bike. If you are willing to do your own wrenching, try bikesdirect.com.

Also, find the seller of that cracked frame, snap one of the seatstays off and cram it up his arse. That frame is only good for a wall hanging or possibly scrap metal.

Pass on this. Technically it's not his to sell anyway since it belongs to Jamis. The only reasonable pr1ce is he pays you $10.00 to drive it down to the recycling center.

OK, but the advice to run, don't walk, away still stands. It's a hard area to repair well and the frame isn't worth the cost or potential problems.

You might try to use your head a little on this one. If the manufacturer could make a repair that would be both economically and legally feasible, that frame would not be available for sale. In the best interest of their customer and to protect their company from potential lawsuits, they chose to replace rather than repair. I'm not sure why the customer has it still as it should have been returned or destroyed to protect the company from any liability. It is highly unethical to even offer that frame to anyone at any price. It is either garbage or wall art but in no way should ever see a road again.

No, this isn't really correct (as a general statement). (To be clear, I agree with other people's advice to "run away" in this case!!)

That something doesn't make sense for the manufacturer does not mean it necessarily also doesn't make sense for an individual.

The cost (to the manufacturer) of a new frame from the production line is going to be much, much less than the cost/hassle of having to deal with the total cost of fixing a frame even for a reasonable and cheap repair.

Essentially, repairs are custom work and the manufacturer isn't in the custom bike business.

Yes.

Typically, replaced frames are the manufacturer's property and are destroyed.

It's already a bare frame. There is nothing on it to salvage.
+1 on sawing it up.

I'm a total cheapskate and enjoy bringing back to life useless junk. So if this frame were given to me, here is what I would do. I would somehow see if I could saw off the rear seat and chain stays and make a truing stand out of it. Maybe just saw off the downtube/top tube and leave the rest of it intact and use a clamp to bolt it to a table for a cheap truing stand.

But even I would never consider fixing that.

Odd, I know a guy that just warrantied his Jamis Aurora, which cracked in the same place, and they had him ship the frame to them.

Even if the frame was usable, if you need to pay retail for parts and/or shop labor, it is much cheaper to buy a new bike.

Frame and fork? See if he'll take $10 for it all (only if the fork isn't bent or broken!) and then either cut up the frame, recycle it, wall art, etc.

I have a few old forks laying around. Maybe I will never use them but they don't take up much room and may get used someday.

Thanks for the mass response guys. I'll stay far away from it and ask the guy why he is offering the frame in the first place.
I think the possibility of a free/ very cheap frame got me far too excited last night and resulted in a brief consideration.
Ah well. The hunt continues.

Free/almost free bikes and frames are actually quite common if you look. If you are near larger cities like Victoria and Vancouver, keep an eye on Craigslist and Kjiji for deals. Generally you can get intact and decent quality older bikes for good deals that need little or no work to ride. Life is to short to waste your time fixing mass produced Asian frames that will probably make your life even shorter.

haha yes indeed. Victoria has a good bicycle recycle shop where you can pick up old frames and parts on the cheap. I'll probably head over there in the next few weeks.
