RX100 shifter repair question
I picked up a Trek 1400 today, 1994 I think, equipped with a 2x8 RX100 group. The previous owner took apart the right shifter in a failed tuning attempt. Any links to a document that shows the parts and proper assembly so that I can make sure all the bits are there and get it working properly again? Totally excited to get this one functional again. It will become my primary ride while I'm rebuilding my Bianchi.

STI shifters?
Non-working STI = bad. They can sometimes be repaired by those with lots of patience. But they have LOTS of tiny parts that have to fit together just right. Broken STI torn apart by previous owner = much worse. I would ditch them and throw on some 8S bar-end shifters. You'll need new brake lever too unless you want to use your dead brifters for braking purposes only. |

Are you certain that the previous owner removed those parts in an attempt to do some tuning, or would it be more honest to say that he was trying to fix a non-functioning shifter? If the latter, I would certainly give up.

What is your Time worth?
Still 8 speed brifters made , and sold, toss the old, buy new , redo the cables & housing, while you are at it. |
Guy on facebook rebuilds shifters like yours. Look him up.
I have used him several times. |
Are we certain the OP has STI aka Brifters? But I do agree he may be better off replacing them wether STI or Downtube shifters.

My work involves assembling small electronic widgets that only go together one way so I'm not worried about lots of tiny parts. I just need to see a diagram. Worst case I'll replace them with working ones but I'd rather try fixing it first. I hate throwing stuff away that can be fixed. The PO had only removed the front cover and spring. Curious though as I'm not familiar with STI stuff: With the cable disconnected from the rear derailleur will I still feel the indexing when I move the shift levers or does the cable have to be properly tensioned?
If it's just the front bit that's off, half an hour's trial and error should do it. I did a write-up on STI overhaul, but unfortunately the pics are crap. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ide&p=10180619 |
