Brifter compatability with mechanical disc brakes
Heyo everybody,
I'm building up a 1x9 rough commuter, and I plan to run drop bars. My RD is a SRAM x.9, and I'd like to use a brifter (aside: though I have always run friction shifters before, 1. my new frame doesn't have mounts for downtube shifters and I don't like barcons and 2. if I go indexed, with a brifter right up front, my habitual mashing will hopefully be lessened, which my knees will really really like, and 3. not being able to trim up on the fly will force me to actually keep up maintenance ). I also am going to run mechanical disc brakes.
Sooooo my question is what brifter would work for the SRAM's shift ratios as well as the pull of my disc calipers (probably Avids)? I'm assuming something SRAM, since they own Avid, but just thought I'd ask somebody (anybody!) that actually knows about this stuff.
Thanks all!

SRAM Road and Mountain groups are not compatible.
If that SRAM derailer is Shimano compatible (too lazy to look it up right now) it will work with Shimano road shifters, but not with SRAM road shifters.
Your disc brake options are:
Avid BB7 ROAD VERSION
Shimano BR-R505
Soon; Shimano BR-R515 or Shimano BR-CX75

I do not believe there are any brifters made that are compatible with Sram mountain derailleurs. I think there are not but I am not sure.
Your best bet for brakes with brifters is the Avid BB7 road brake. The BB7 mountain brake is designed for a longer cable pull than brifters can manage, so you need to use the road brakes.

Thanks all for your input!
I was thinking i might have to end up using travel agents to match ratios, but if there is a brifter designed to work with the long pull of the bb7s as well as the 1:1 of my RD, I was hoping to use it. . . if only to keep my rig a little cleaner. I'll look into the options you guys mentioned.
Thanks again.

You'll have a problem with the brakes, too.

BB7 Road version is designed to work with road levers and brifters. You may be able to use one of the J-Tec models in my link above to pick a lever that could work with you X.9 Rear Der. You may also want to take a look at the modified SRAM derailures at the bottom of this page https://www.davincitandems.com/comp.html

Shimano MTB and Road Rear Mechs are cross compatible with shifters, as long as it's not "dyna-sys". Therefore, a Shimano compatible SRAM Rear Mech should also be compatible with Shimano road shifters.

I'm using Avid BB5 Road discs with Dura Ace STI integrated shifters. It works perfectly. 160/140mm rotors front/rear.
I'm not sure if you're aware that there is a ROAD and a MOUNTAIN version of Avid mechanical discs.
The calipers of the mountain version are black and the road version are silver.
The next generation Sora STI levers will be able to work any kind of brake, mountain or road. The upshift knob will be gone, replaced by a conventional lever.
