IF the new chain skips, the gears are too far gone.
At least you can use cheap chains.

the newer hyperglide stuff looks worn down when its new , to have it shift early.

Bike shops have the ability to see in person, go there.
there are quick chain check tools,
worn chain, left on too long wears down the teeth it passes over.

From the photo it looks OK, but the only test is if a chain runs without skipping.

Here's what I'd do in your situation. Buy a new chain and see if runs OK. If so, chuck the old chain in the scrap bin. If not save the new chain for a new freewheel in the future, re-install the original chain and ride it until it skips.

While it may pay to replace chains at 1/2% (1/16" over 12") stretch to increase sprocket life, and allow new chains to run smoothly on old freewheels, the same chain/freewheel combination kept together can often tin OK until stretch of 2% or so. That's almost 4x the typical replacement point, so you may be riding this freewheel and chain for quite a while yet.
