Need help with my rear derailer!
I'm very new to bike maintenance so bear with me.
my derailer cage is not positioned properly. It is in a horizontal rather than vertical position. Check out the pic
any ideas how to adjust this?
the bike is schwinn prelude 14 speed road bike. Its been sitting in the basement for a couple years. And has seen almost no road time.

It looks like the lower tension spring is not working. It could be corroded sitting in a basement for years (I'm guessing the derailleur was left in this stretched out position), or broken or slipped out of it's retaining hole or a combination. You may just need to break away some corrosion by simply grabbing the cage and twisting it in a right side down direction. If that doesn't fix the problem, you'll have to remove the derailleur and remove the cage from the lower body to find the cause.

By look of it, it might be toast. Seems seized. It's cheap and nasty crap, anyway...
I reckon you should be able to pick up a used Shimano derailleur of far superior quality from anytime in the last 25 years* for like $10. Only pre-97 Dura-Ace and Dyna-Sys are incompatible.
*If it says 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 speed, that's fine, it just needs to have been made since indexing began.

You might be able to hose the pivot joint down with a penetrating oil and work it back into shape???
