Cantilever brake retrofit?

Here goes another of my "weird request threads".

Does anyone know of a good supplier of clamp-on cantilever brake mounts? I'm looking to outfit an old frameset with cantis, but I don't want to try brazing it, as my brazing would probably fail at the worst possible moment and cause me to get my face reshaped by a bus. I've seen them before, but I can't remember where.

Thanks in advance.

I only recall a few years back someone with Moots Clamp-on mountain bike brake bosses. Can't seem to find them for sale anywhere any longer.

You're probably better off with some decent dual pivot calipers using the existing brake mounts if you have them, or you might swap forks and go canti-front, and caliper rear.

I recall Mavic used to sell a plate with canti posts, but I think that was designed to bolt to existing canti posts to move them up or down.

I wish you best of luck in your search, but I think it is a bad idea. It would be much easier to use a long reach caliper brake. Modern dual pivot brkaes are now available for fairly wide tires.

Anyhoo, I saw a picture of a set from www.danscomp.com, and I have seen a similar thing but for U-brakes (different pivot, higher up the fork) from Danscomp and other sources... I even had one myself but it was quite fiddly to get it working.

+1, BMX niche has a center bolt-on to V brake boss adapter plate..
+ You could likely use one of those fork crown bolt mounted housing stops ,
on the same center bolt, then ..
front and back, .. or just use V brakes. they sell them to allow V brake mount.

center bolt hole is slotted, to adjust height.
V brake and you can fit it on the back of the front fork,
so the flex is into the fork , as a backstop.

I have them on my '86 Mountaineer. They haven't been around for at least 20 years, and never knew of anyone else who manufactured anything similar.

The main reason I was asking is that I've got two pairs of cantilever brakes lying around. I found a "brake plate" for a BMX which is basically what I'm after, but it's £20 for one, and at that price it's not worth it for a bike which is basically going to be a beater. I was thinking there would be a cheaper solution, and seeing as there isn't, I'll just stick with the sidepulls I've got at the moment. I've got an old set of centrepull calipers in my shed, I might throw those on and see if they're any better than the sidepulls.

Thanks guys!
