Sram Apex Front Derailleur's Are Junk
 

Ok so i have constantly had to adjust my apex front derailleur. I have tried everything height changes, tilting the cage, tighter cable loose cable, extremly minor adjustments of the limit screws. The freaking thing is constantly throwing off the big chain ring and if i can get it adjusted to work properly it goes out of tune in 20-30 miles. now i have a small repair business and have tuned my fair share of derailleurs but this one has got me going crazzy right now the only solutions i have is to throw this thing away and get like a shimano 6700 or maybe the 2012 Yaw Sram Red. any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

squish the fd cage together. not too impressed with the apex group on my specialized crux that i have for a commuter. im going back to shimano for the cheapo stuff. i had a tiagra group last year and it was just fine for commuting on.

I had endless problems with a Force FD. Several mechanics tried to get it right & none could.
I had countless (100's, no exaggeration) drops & very poor shifts.
My LBS ordered a new Force FD, installed it, and with over 700 miles so far, shifting has been flawless.
The mechanic said that in his experience, if a Sram derailleur can't be tuned easily, just get a new one.
He was right.
Get a new one under warranty, and you'll be fine.

I got the bike like 2 hours away so it would coast me the same in gas to get it covered under warrenty then to buy a new one. I have heard people get some good results with the shimano ultegra 6700 on the sram system so i will give that a try until i can get my hands on one of the new 2012 Sram Red YAW

If you're using a SRAM crankset, you may want to make sure the non-drive side crank hasn't worked itself loose. That can cause the chain rings to move back and forth laterally--it may not happen when just spinning the pedals around on a workstand but then you get out on the road and the force of pedaling can cause it to happen. Makes getting the front derailleur adjustment right impossible.

Hey wow, that sounds like a really good contender for a genuine sucker punch / red herring kinda syndrome there. Perhaps SRAM derailleurs aren't dodgy after all, LOL

So I installed an ultegra 6700 FD today tune it in about 30 seconds and it shifts like a dream should have been the first upgrade to this bike. 6700 FD FTW:thumb:

How is it working I'm after the same fix myself mate

It's been 3 years. What have been doing in the meantime?
