advice for new seat post
 

My used Rascal 89 Klein has a fixed (doesn't adjust up or down) seat post. The nose is up too high and uncomfortable on long rides. Any suggestions for a seat post replacement that won't break the bank? I don't race (yes I know this was once a racing bike but I love it and don't want to part with it yet) so I don't need anything fancy that allows one to easily adjust while riding. Just looking for a post I can adjust the nose down one notch and leave it there. Thanks.

Plain Kalloy.. made in all diameters ..7/8"/ 22.2mm at the top portion.
nicest micro-adjust stepless 1 bolt I've found
is actually the Saddle clip Brompton makes , AKA pentaclip, they're $30.
the multiplate clamping system reminds me of motorcycle clutches.

some saddles you see the rails from the sides , and the underside of the seat gets close..
Race Face has 1 bolt that clamps from the side, angle is a separate bolt,
it grips a clamp band around the seat post. a clever design.

others the flaps down the side of the saddle make adjustment difficult any where other than below.

Traditional 2 bolts on the top Campagnolo seat posts were developed when Brooks was the saddle.
the combination is perfect.

Thomsons are the standard in seatpost for me, but any 2-bolt design will do it on a budget. The salsa shaft is a great on etoo.

I remember customers at my old shop with old Kleins who replaced their posts for the same reason.

I gotta say, I love thomson posts, but I'm also running more and more straight posts with clamp-on guts...the type I used to snob on. So, I guess I'm avoiding the grey areas these days. The beauty of the guts/straight post set up is that it's cheap and adjustable.

The Race Face Evolve seat post is oval shaped. Will that fit a round tube?

That post doesn't look non-adjustable to me. Loosen the rear bolt and tighten the front bolt to drop the nose.

I don't like posts with no setback, but a lot of people do. They sell a lot of Thomsons.

You are right and thanks to Puget Pounder for asking for pics. That got me thinking that maybe it is adjustable. I took my seat off the post, took the pictures per request, and then started to loosen the two screws more so that I had a lot of play. The mechanism that felt stationary was stuck in place but with some work I got it to move. Not the easiest clamp to work with but it will do for know. Got the nose down a wee bit which improved my ride but then I found another problem: my handlebar is too low. For greater comfort I plan to raise them up a couple of inches. That should be a challenge. So thanks for all the good advice and in the future if I need a seat post I now have several good ones to choose from.
