These fork threads reparable?

Hi -

I have two forks with damaged threads. One has damage from the keyed washer, and the other is just generally messed up.

Can I have my LBS fix these threads, or are they done? Thank you.

The 2nd one looks pretty okay as it is. If you ran a die down it, it would clean up nicely.

The 1st one is kind of iffy. You would run a die down it first of all to clean it up. But there might not be enough meat on the remaining threads to catch well.

You might have to shim it a bit or use a different locking nut with the threads in a different spot so that it catches differently.

Should be able to chase the threads with the fork threading die.

hopefully the Shop owns one,,

The damage on the first fork was probably the result of riding with a loose headset, allowing the threaded cup to wobble on the threads, eventually eroding them. Unfortunately, this means the threads are gone in the very place you need them most. It can be repaired, but it's more involved than simply chasing the threads with a die. I've fixed forks in that state by filling the damaged threads with brass and then cutting new threads into the brass. The brass threads aren't as strong as the original steel threads, but if you're careful to keep the headset properly adjusted they'll hold up fine in normal use.

I agree the second fork ought to be fine with just chasing the threads.

Cool, I'll take them to bike shop and have them take a look. Thanks for the info, all
