EA50 clincher freehub problem

I have an EA50 clincher wheelset. Bought in March 2012 I have a little over 800 miles on the wheels. While riding today was getting a loud creaking sound with each pedal revolution. I thought it was my bottom bracket giving up the ghost but it kept getting louder and louder, though only while pedaling. When coasting there was silence - including no sound from the freehub. That's when I realized it was the rear wheel and I needed to get home asap. Over the next 12 miles the creaking got even louder and eventually the pawls stopped engaging when I resumed pedaling unless I backpedaled first and even then they didn't engage all of the time.

I'm going to pull the freehub tonight to see what's going on but am also wondering if other have had a similar problem? I have a Shimano Ultegra 11-28 cassette on the wheel. Up until today they have been problem free. I bought them at REI so will probably just return them but I'm also worried whether this was a fluke or if this common to Easton freehub bodies.

Beaker!

Since the wheels are less than 2 months old and you bought them from a reputable place, you should be able to take them back and get a refund or exchange. I've got tens of thousands of miles on Shimano hubs, with only one failure in the freehub body to show for it. That hub had been through hell, too, so I don't blame it for giving up the ghost.

I have the same set, and I have put on about 500 miles in the past 8 or 9 months, and I have had no problems yet. I did however take apart the hub, and re lube it before the first use.

Good luck!

What kind of cassette are you using? I did a google search on this and saw some comments about Easton bodies getting gouged by Shimano cassettes, but not Campy or SRAM. Btw, I lived on Kadena when I was a kid. How is the cycling on Okinawa?
