Dry Rot and Mtn. Bike Tires
For a few years now I have been looking at serious dry rot on my Mtn. Bike's rear tire. However, with a good tube, it hasn't seem to effect the performance of the machine. Nevertheless, I just bought a new tire from Nashbar. Any comments?

I don't think it's really "dry rot" but cracks and crazing in the tread rubber due to aging, flexing and light exposure. As long as the casing isn't affected, the tires are safe to use. Once the cracks extend into and expose the casing cords, the tire should be replaced. |
Thanks for the reply. Crazing is a new word for me. I'm going to do a close inspection of the cracks and see if they do expose the casing cords.
