New chainring?
 

I was hit by a truck a couple months ago while on my road bike. My broken shoulder is now healed and I am riding again but I see the outer chain ring got bent a bit in the accident, question is, bend it back or replace. also it looks like there was threadlock of some kind on the chainring bolts, anything special I need to use there?

What crank make and model do you have? Many lower line cranks have the chainrings riveted to the spider arms and can not be removed or replaced. For a crank with removable chainrings, typically you need a 5 mm allen key for the bolt heads and, maybe, a special spanner or wide blade screwdriver to keep the inner nuts from turning.

It's a Bontrager crank, the chain rings came off with no problem. Then large chainring had a slight bend in it, I think I have it straight again, everything seemed ok in the bike stand, I'll try it on the road this weekend and see how it goes. Looking at the price of new rings makes me think I would throw in a little more cash and get a new compact crank if I have to replace the rings I have.

If the straightened chainring is working ok, sure, continue to use it. As you have discovered, a new complete crank is often not much more than just replacing chainrings.

I'd just get a whole new crank.. now you get to choose chainring sizes.
Manufacturer goes by their choices, now it's your turn.

I doubt you need a huge high gear.. ..
