I have lost some weight recently and now it is time that my commuting bike followed my example- the obvious candidate is the Manitou Comp Luxe suspension fork- I only ride on bike paths and roads with this bike so the suspension is not needed.

The trouble is I am having trouble finding any suitable rigid forks- it seems that rigid forks are out at the moment and suspension is in.

Can anyone recommend a good rigid fork for my commuter?- I don´t want silly light that will fall apart but it would be nice to get the weight of the bike down a bit.

if anyone is interested the axle to crown (bottom of the headtube) length is 45 cm when the fork is not under any load. The headtube diameter is 11/8 by the looks of it. Tyre size is 700c.

you live in munich(neidisch),why don't you buy a cheap used suspension fork ,even in the city that has advantages and a suspencion fork might get you in the awesome mountains around you.if you really want a rigid fork for commuting only ,you can just throw anything on there.

I already have a suspension fork and this is for my commuter that only gets used in the city- I have a mountain bike in the event I get to the mountains-

I can´t just thrown anything on because I can´t find anything that that would be at all suitable- it seems the world has gone suspension mad

What's your pricerange?
  • Kona Project 2 - Best bang for buck, IMHO
  • Surly 1x1 - Also very good bargain
  • Surly Instigator
  • Pace RC31 - Drool factour
  • Winwood Carbon MTB Fork - Very sweet
  • Tange generic MTB fork - If you just need something solid to get you by

Check out Bikeman's Rigid MTB forks webpage for some ideas. Make sure to try and match your axle-to-crown measurements so you don't throw off your handling.

Price is not important for the right fork- it seems like I don´t have that much choice-it is not an MTB so the forks you have listed won´t fit- this is the problem :-(

Oh. For some reason I thought it was a MTB. Is it a 700C wheeled bike? I imagine you should be able to find plenty of rigid forks for that. Is it because it has V-brakes? Check out cyclocross forks.

Here are two forks that might work:
  1. Surly Cross-Check
  2. Surly Long-Haul Trucker

Take a look at the Surly Karate Monkey. It's made for 29" wheel MTBs but that just means you can fit your 700C wheel in it.

Kona makes the project 2 in a 700c size with disc mounts. It's towards the bottom of the page. One hundred nineteen euro.

There's probably not a lot of used or old 700C forks with disc tabs. Those are quite new in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions- I have a few possibilities to look into now-the Kona looks quite promising - it should be available in Europe as it is priced in Euro.

If you get the Kona disc fork, check on the lengths. I think that the mountain is actually longer than the cyclocross version, so since your bike originally has a suspension, you might want the longer one.

At least 2 out of these 3 should have what you need.

Surly
Spicer
Dimension

I use the Kona Project 2 Disc on my commuter, works great. Lighter and cheaper than the Surly I think. An added bonus is that it also has eyelets for fenders! You can bend the fender stay a little if the disc caliper is in the way, works on my bike.

I got mine for $50 USD from Bikeco. But shipping to EU would neglect any savings.

If you have the 700c version could you perhaps tell me what the front wheel axle to crown (bottom of the headtube is) length is?- I did send an E-mail to Kona but some of the e-mail addresses didn't work and I have only got an automated reply so far.

Between 406 and 410 mm. Although I'm not sure if I have the 700c or MTB version, not even sure if there's any difference. When I was shopping for it, I remember asking shops if there was a difference and got a lot of conflicting answers. Some said the MTB version didn't have eyelets, yet mine does. A 700c wheel would probably fit on my fork.

German builder, Tout Terrain makes a fine fork right there in Germany
Disc only brake, but as it is a touring fork has a few rack & mudguard braze-ons
to make it quite versatile, such as wiring guides for a hub dynamo..

long blade suspension corrected forks should be fine with 700c wheels
if disc brakes are utilized.

Also fine, Koga Miyata has an aluminum fork for Trekking bikes,
a NL company...

..other than the original Q,

for the topic changer post, directly above,
the wheel probably has to lose the thru axle hub
to use a non custom rigid fork retrofit.
N+1.. on another bike perhaps, buy the appropriate tool for the purpose..

Might be better asked in MTB. I'm not even sure how many are available.

Google turned up 26" DMR for $225 which corrects for 100mm travel.

And Salsa 29er for about $180, including Maxle skewer. I don't know much about those Maxles so dunno if it'll work with your front wheel or not.

Actually I dunno whether you're running 26" or 29" either, so....
