9spd chain on 8 spd cassette

I have a 9spd chain and 8 spd cassette on a new bike build. Are these compatible if i take a few links out? Is there any difference besides length?

The slightly narrower 9-spd chain will have no ill effects. Supposedly the wider 8-spd will on 9 cassette, but I haven't seen a probs in testing.

It's sometimes claimed the narrower 9 speed chain can cause front shifting problems with a triple, especially on MTB.

I run a 9 spd chain on 8 speed crank/chainrings. I found I had to use thinner spacers for the granny gear, otherwise it seems fine. YRMV of course.

On new equipment the crankset is hardly an issue, since predominantly the cranks ar only 8-spd now.
