Installing Barend Shifters

Hi All,

I've finally gotten some replacement shifters for my dead Tiagra STIs. And now the fun part -- putting them on.

The first thing I read on the directions for the Dura Ace 9spd barends was "These shifters can only be used with Dura Ace derailleurs." Is this true? I know I've seen other 9spd barend set-ups with all kinds of rear derailluers. Maybe they weren't Dura Ace shifters??? I don't have the bread to buy a whole new Dura Ace rear derailleur, and my 105 is working just fine!

Also, what do you do if you can't install the cable housing stop bosses? I don't have down-tube braze-ons for the housing stop bosses, but I do have some housing stops that are welded to the bottom of my down-tube by the head tube. Can I just use those if I cut the housings down a bit?

Thanks!

In your particular case, you have a couple of options. You can install in-line cable adjusters or go without any adjusters at all. Your rear derailleur has a barrel adjuster anyway. Front derailleur shifting is friction, therefore as long as your cable tension is fine, there's no need for an adjuster there. The front shifter has a lot of shifting latitude. Only thing you can't do is make on the fly adjustments without in-line adjusters.
My bar-end shifters are set up with no adjusters because of no down tube braze ons (mtb frame). Barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur is all I need.

If the shifters are index, you're hosed. D-A have different cable throws than other Shimano ders.

I guess I don't understand "cable throws." As I understand it, the shifters are SIS, but you can also chose a pure friction setting which seems like it'd work with anything under the sun.

Anyone have any further ideas?

In friction mode, yes, any rear derailleur would work.
But I'm a bit surprised to learn that the DA 9 speed bar-end shifter indexes only with DA rear derailleur. I've seen touring bikes using these shifters with XT derailleurs, for example. I'm sure they were 9 speed set ups.

Bull...He has a 9 speed setup. The 9 speed DA barends are fully compatible. It's the pre 9 speed DA stuff that had the issues.

It's just shimano BS and a label they should have changed years ago. They are fully 9 speed compatible with any shimano RD other than a pre 9 speed DA.And they even work with a pre 9 speed DA to shift an 8 speed shimano cogset.

Ignore the stupid label on the shifters They are compatible with any shimano SIS RD other than a pre 9 speed DA. Don't your stops at the HT have an adjuster in them? With barends you don't really need adjusters anyway. There is the critical one at the RD, and the FD doesn't have to have one.

Ignore it. That post was just barnyard waste.

There *is* only one model of 9-speed bar-end: Dura-ace (SL-BS77). They work in all Shimano 9-speed setups with all Shimano indexed rear derailers *except* pre-9-speed Dura-ace. For the pre-9-speed Dura-ace (RD-7400), they actually shift 8-speed spacing. Before 9-speed, Dura-ace shifters only worked with Dura-ace rear derailers and that is probably the origin of the statement.

Well, I've got the bar-end shifters installed and am pretty stoked! It went smoothly with only a couple minor errors. The shifting seems to be right on in both SIS and friction modes. As for the lack of bosses to install the housing stops, I simply put the housings into the stops that are welded to my down-tube. They are simply little, metal "sleeves" with no adjuster mechanisms whatsoever. The barrel adjuster on the RD seems fine for now. Of course, the bike is still in the stand as we got a bunch of snow and I've been too pansy to take it for a spin. I'll see how it works on the Monday a.m. commute!

I have an Dura-Ace 8-Sis (SL-7402) indexed downtube shifter.
And it seems to index and shift just fine with an current new Tiagra 9-speed derailleur on an new HG-50 8-speed casette?
If i read the previous post's correct, this shouldnt be working? or?

It works if you are using the alternate cable mount at the RD. Sheldon Brown has the story in his DA article at www.harriscyclery.com

I just recentley installed some ultegra 10 speed bar-end shifters and some 287-V brakes on my giant ocr touring bike. Only trouble installing was the need for longer shift cables--went with some tandom cables. They shift smooooth and faster than my sti's. Im glad I got 'em. I use them in friction mode.
