Another stuck seat post…suspension type
 

I think I know the answer to this already, but the genius of this forum never ceases to amaze me (yes…I’m pandering), so here goes.

Can’t really get a safe wrenching site because the inner post is on a spring and funnel shaped outer post doesn’t allow for a grip surface. The knurled portion in the photo is a thread on so I don’t want to use too much force on it. I think it just sets the resistance cause when I unthreaded it nothing comes out of the inner tube. Tried one of those strap type wrenches but that didn’t work either.

I’ve already spread the seat post collar as far as I dare. Also, doesn’t look like it in the photo, but it’s been hit about 10 times over the past 3 days with PB Blaster. I’m afraid to use too much heat for fear of ruining the seat tube paint.

I didn’t pay much for the bike so no disasters in the making, but I would like to save both the post and the bike if possible. Any suggestions beyond get another bike, leave it the way it is, or saw off the seat post? Thanx.

the taper on the outside is what is holding strong. i would take an air chisel and catch the lip of the collar and drive it up

Actually, when I look real close, the taper ends just a mm or two before the seat tube begins, however I see your point. I'm still fixed though on the challenge of saving both the bike and the post if possible. Thanks for the reply.

Seat posts... urgghhh, don't remind me. The last time I tried to to remove one I had to cut it down and s-l-o-w-l-y hacksaw the inside of the tube. It was awaste of time, the "post" was a random piece of aluminium tubing about three sizes too big and 2 feet too long. How the idiot ever got it so far down the tube I'll never know. The bike, despite being otherwise decent condition is currently residing in a pile of scrap metal at the recycling centre.

My problem is similar....bike is hybrid type, perfect as a back up bike for my wife. Has Deore drs, rapid fire shifters, paint decent, cromo frame, etc., and she likes the suspension post but not in present position. My main fear is that I will destroy the post trying to remove it and wreck the bike in the process or be unable to get it out. I'm getting close to trying the air chisel method previously suggested.
