Question about spacer removal
 

Hi guys,

I'm trying to remove my spacer and replace it with something lower. I have questions regarding that procedure. Do I need to remove the top cover (in green)? What is that called btw (not headset I assume)? If I have to remove it, how do I do it? It has a hex pattern hole. I tried using an appropriate hex key and twisted it CCW but it didn't rotate at all. Also, the hex hole is kind of stripped. The previous owner might have done something stupid to it.

If you remove anything from below the stem, you will need to either:
a) Add spacer above stem.
b) Cut down steerer.

You have a single alloy cone spacer, maybe 20mm. You'll need a shorter spacer beneath stem plus either another spacer above stem or cut steerer.

Since the hex bolt's only function is for headset preload, there is no reason for the bolt head to be rounded out like that. Someone may have attempted to adjust the headset incorrectly.

I would suggest a trip to the LBS for the necessary bits. Consider bringing the bike.

That doesn't look like a spacer, it looks like part of the headset but not completely clear in the pic. If it is part of the HS, only way to lower would be to change it.

The Spacer is actually part of the CaneCreek HS and I think they make shorter ones.

You should replace that bolt with a Stainless one from the hardware store.

Thanks for the input guys. Considering I don't have necessary equipments to install a headseat, I will bring my bike to a LBS. How much should I be expecting to pay (parts and labor)? I don't care about the brand. As long as it works.

With parts and labor, I expect it to be no more than $30. A smaller headset cap/conical spacer should be no more than $10, a new top cap bolt should be no more than $2, and unless those stem bolts are torx (if they are hex, then they are seriously damaged), you'll need new ones too. Labor should be no more than 30min.

That is not too bad. Will use this opportunity to build a relationship with my LBS as well. :)

Looks like you have a different type of top cap, used only on carbon steerer tubes. May be a little more expensive.

How much more expensive are we talking about? I assume the parts are more expensive.

How much equity do you have in your house?

Shouldn't be any more than $50. I'm not familiar with carbon steerer expander bolts etc, so I can't really guess how much it might cost.
