Left Pedal Bolt Will Not COME OFF!!!
 

Hey everybody, I am having troubles today as I was just trying to do a 5 min job (at least thats what I thought it was going to be) of swapping pedals out. I took the right side off with ease, 15mm wrench and it came right off, so I swapped that pedal out fast and easy. Now I am at the left side, and this thing will not budge!!! It almost looks like it was tigthtened way to far into the crank, because I have some aluminum shavings coming off of the crank I do hope and beleive its from the crank and not the threads. I have had a cheater bar on the end of my 15mm wrench. It moved a little bit, but not much.

Make sure you are loosening it the correct way and leverage. Combine this http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-...-4-pw-5-hcw-16 with a PW-3 wrench should be enough to get most stuck pedals off.

wow! I didnt realize and noone ever told me it was left hand threads on the LEFT SIDE! Im upset with myself right now! I should have known that. Especially when they are Stamped with a L and a R. Thanks for the input

That's how you learn -- no harm done. I ruined a pair of carbon pedals when I tried to remove the pedal from the spindle. The left pedal had left-hand threads. I managed to strip out the carbon threads before I realized the problem.

yeah I am really hoping its not stripped out now, I dont think it is, because its still tight and not slipping, so I hope im in luck. That sucks man with the carbon pedals! But we all have to live and learn i guess unfortunately! Now my dilemma is going to be to get it off since I have been tightening the whole time with a freaking CHEATER BAR! Any Suggestions?

I am holding the right side crank with a wrench and trying to loosen the left side pedal bolt, (going the right way this time LEFT HAND THREADS!!) Since I tightened the crap out of it and didnt realize that, how can I get this off now? Becuase I feel like its just my left arm against my right arm. Im trying to not have to take the crank off, because I dont own a crank puller. I have a feeling I might have to remove the crank and put it in a vice though. Thoughts suggestions please?

Use a longer wrench that gives you more leverage. For pedals which accept a hex key just use a longer socket wrench. If you don't own a longer wrench you can slip a pipe over the end of a shorter wrench.

If you're having problems keeping the other side from moving you can put your foot on it.

So basically put my whole weight on the right side while trying to loosen the left side, with a longer wrench or cheater bar?

the only other thing is, im tightening the right side crank while holding it and trying to loosen the left side pedal. I dont want that crank bolt to become to tight or snap off!

got it fixed! didnt like the way I had to do it, but i got it! thanks for all your input. STUPID LEFT HAND THREADS!!! haha time to saddle up now!!

Don't try to fight yourself. Put your bike with the front wheel against a wall and the left pedal pointing straight ahead. Put your wrench onto the pedal in the direction which has the wrench passing closest to the crank axle (facing towards the rear). This will minimize the leverage against the chainwheels. Sit on the bike and put your left foot on the wrench and step down on it. The bike can't move forward and you should be able to break the pedal free. If this fails find a really large vise attached to an equally large bench. Pad the jaws of the vise with thick leather like an old belt and have a friend help you pick the bike up and clamp the left crank into the vise. Then lean on the breaker bar in the correct direction. A judicious application of heat may help to loosen the pedal-to-crank joint, jsut don't overdo it.

Put the right pedal on and then put the wrench on the left pedal to remove it. Now stand on the right pedal and stand on the wrench on the left pedal. If you have someone around to help hold the bike while you hop on the pedal and wrench things should come lose. Be careful not to let the wrench dig into the frame or wheel as you try to break it lose.

A safer method might to be to have a friend hold a piece of pvc pipe over the right crank with the pedal off while you use a wrench and cheater on the left pedal.
