Can I put a 700 X 28 tire on this rim?
I have a Trek 2120 bike (vintage ~ 1995 I think). The rims are Matrix Aurora rims, and the tires on them now are 700 X 23. How wide a tire can I put on these rims? I've seen Sheldon Brown's matrix of rim / tire size compatibility, but unfortunately I don't know the interior width of the rim and it's not printed on the rim as far as I can see.
I feel comfortable going to 25s, but does anyone know if 28s will work OK?
Thanks,
Mike (newbie to this forum)

Ummm, you could measure the rim. The problem might not be the tire vs rim width but rather the frame clearance; many frames are rather tight on clearance particularly at the chain stays.

It may depend more on the amount of clearance on your frame and fork. I can't fit a 28 on my Cannondale, and I don't think I could even fit a 25 on my wife's Madone.

That bike came with 25's.
Some 28's may fit, but will be very tight at the brake bridge, seat tube and chain stays.
Not all 28's are actually 28's some are 30's.

Thanks for the tip about frame clearance, I'll look at that. I know I can measure the rim, but I was hoping someone might be familiar with this rim and save me the trouble.

They will fit the rim.....but that will not help you if they won't fit the frame and brakes.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

They will definitely fit the rims. Measure the space between the top of the existing tire and the brake bridge, and the space between the side of the existing tire and the seat- and chain-stays or fork legs. If you have at least 5mm to spare under the brake bridge and at least 3 mm to spare between the tire and stays or fork legs then a 28 mm tire might fit. If it seems like it might be a tight fit, assume it won't work and make sure you can return any tire you get if it doesn't fit.
The other optrion would be to go to 25 mm tires... not as big a differnce, but it might help.

I'm running Ritchey Speedmax 37s on my IGH grocery getter on a front Campy Proton wheel - a pretty narrow rim. Does narrow the tire a bit to 35s, but I've never had an issue.

I'm usually in the 210-220 lb range and I've ridden 700x23 and 700x25 tires. I decided I would switch to 700x28 so I bought some Gatorskins. They are much bigger than my older 700x25 tires. IOW all tires are not equal, some will be significantly larger or smaller than others.
As for measuring your rim- you can do this for an estimate. I have an old road rim in the garage, it measures about 19.5mm wide on the outside and just over 14mm wide on the inside therefore each side of the rim is between 2.5mm and 3mm thick.

It looks like a 28 should fit on this bike. I've decided to play it safe for now and go with 25s. I understand the constraints now, and maybe I'll try 28s next time I need tires if the 25s don't do it for me. Thanks!
