Wheel building, spoke length

Im building a set of wheels and took my hubs to be measured at the LBS. I was told to order different sized spokes if I build with wheel smith instead of DT Swiss. The measurements were 292 and 294 for DT and 293 and 295 for wheel smith. Is this info accurate? Why would they not be the same size?

Because oftentimes DT Swiss spokes come out of the box 1/2mm shorter than the size indicated on the box label.

All of this can be avoided by utilizing an LBS that stocks bulk spokes and cuts and re-threads using a Phil Wood, Morizumi or Kowa spoke machine.

Well....
In my neck of the woods, the shops around here only stock spokes at 2 mm interval. My guess would be that for DT, 292/294 got them the closest to theoretical ideal.
If WS either had greater resolution, or if they'd simply stocked WS at odd numbers, you'd get another selection that'd be closest to theoretic ideal.
Maybe running DT on one side and WS on the other would have gotten you even a little bit closer to theoretical ideal.

If DT spokes are short on delivery, shouldn't stated lengths recommedation be longer than for WS?

Whoops...read it backwards...good catch Dabac!

...which of course, does reinforce the OPs stated mystery.

But I stick by my original point, spoke machine equipped LBS avoids this entirely - assuming they know how to calculate spoke lengths to begin with - much less use the machine itself.
