Wobbly Freewheel

Hi again everybody!

The Suntour Freewheel on my 1985 Schwinn Peloton wobbles a bit. I can only see this when the bike is on the bike stand and I can't say that I feel it while I ride. (But these kind of things bug me!). The wheel does not wobble and the axle is tightly secured in the dropouts. The skewer does feel a little lose in the axle but when I tried a different skewer the same wobble occurred. When I take the wheel off, the freewheel seems secure on the axle and does not wobble when I spin it and does not feel lose in any way. Does anybody have any advice? Is there a safety issue here? Thanks.

It's normal for them to wobble a little.

The various parts that make up a freewheel all need to be coaxial with the threads that it screws onto the hub with and perpendicular to the face that butts up against the hub's shoulder. When the cogs mounting surfaces, the freewheel threads/face or the hub's shoulders are not all copesetic the cogs do their orbital dance. Some times shifting their rotational phase (using a spacer that is not equal the the thread pitch) will change this. Andy.

Google freewheel wobble - much easier and more complete than waiting for opinions here.
