Cracked Frame
I just noticed what looks to be a small crack on the underside of the down tube on my Salsa El Mariachi Steel Frame.
I've got a couple questions...
1) Do you think this is a crack?
2) Is it worth repairing?

vincavinz, That looks like the down tube reinforcement's weld. If you can't make it worse by flexxing the frame it's probably okay.

Brad, So, are you thinking it's a chip in the paint that is exposing it or are you saying that the frame is cracked, but still safe?

Looks like a crack to me too. Very common place to see cracks and ripples resulting from head on collisions... you'd also likely see a bulge under the top tube right at the head tube, and a backwards bend on the fork.

Thanks for the opinions. I just bought it used. Luckily, the guy who sold it is willing to refund me.
Note to self - Bring flashlight when looking at frame in late evening.
Think there's any use taking it a LBS?

Can't tell for sure but that looks bent, like maybe it bottomed out on something.
It could also just be spherical aberration in the photo.
Should be easy to check with a straight edge.

Could just be a paint crack, but it's a very suspicious spot to find 'just a paint crack'.
Agreed that while it looks bent in the photos, that might just be barrel distortion from the lens, or it would have been obvious (I think) to the OP.

Looks like a crack; to be sure you'd have to scrape some of the surrounding paint off.
Also, it's easier all round if you just include your pix by uploading them here. That way we don't have to load up another site to check them out, they'll remain for posterity instead of disappearing one day, and you can do it in the posting process instead of visiting another site yourself.

vincavinz, As the seller will refund your money, it's best to return it.

Confirmed with the LBS - It's a crack . I'm going to get my money back, but for future reference, something like this is repairable by a good frame builder for probably $100
