Need help installing Avid BB7 disc brakes on my Kona Dew Plus
I have a '10 Kona Dew Plus. I'm replacing the Hayes MX4 calipers with the Avid BB7 calipers. Few problems and questions.
1. I can't seem to find a way to screw the anchor bolt on the rear caliper because my frame is giving clearance issues. Same problem with the upper CPS bolt. Any suggestions? Picture below.
2. Is this safe? The inboard pad knob is sitting very close to the spokes. OTB is always sitting behind my mind.
3. What is the proper way to align calipers? I don't understand what Avid's direction in the manual is saying. People have mentioned to the turn the inboard one full turn and clamp the rotor with the outboard pad, others say turn the outboard in and then 10 clicks out, etc.

1. You'll have to track down a different hex wrench with a shorter short end. Or a hex bit held by a small vice grip, etc. Or take a dremel to a hex wrench.
2. Looks similar to the clearance I have on three bikes but hard to tell from the picture.
3. I always have to look at their directions. As I recall, loosen caliper fixing bolts, adjust inner pad against the rotor, adjust outer pad securely against rotor, secure fixing bolts, back off inner pad a little bit and outer pad a bit more. You want to end up with smaller gap between inner pad and rotor and a larger gap between outer pad and rotor.
That's as I recall - BB7's are pretty tolerant of variation in adjustment.

Get a hex wrench set with balldriver tips such as the ParkTool HXS-1.2. The ball driver tip work like a universal joint allowing wrench to drive the bolt at indirect angle.

Bondhaus makes ball end allen sets .. L shape.. ball on the long end
might be able to find ball end in 1/4 or 3/8" drive sockets too..
more leverage and you can use a torque wrench too..
Get all the bolts in, loose, before tightening any , fully.
