Cassette Free Hub problem
I have 2 XC bikes with Azonic Outlaw wheels, both have issues with loose Cassettes. The nut (ring) that holds the cassettes on are tight but the cassettes are still slightly loose with slight side-to-side play. The cassettes are almost new Shimano parts. Any bumps or drops cause them to rattle and they are noisy when shifting.
The cassettes are HG-50 so they're not high end parts but I've never had problems with them before. I've built over 12 complete bikes so I do have some experience with bikes but I've never had this problem before. |

Cassettes work in a way analogous to threadless headsets. The front edge of the cassette must overhang the freehub body by 1mm or so so that the lockring can compress the cassette before bottoming out on the front of the freehub body. All brands of freehub bodies aren't identical in length, so some require a spacer behind the cassette to bring the front out far enough. Rather than worry about which need spacers and which don't , check for overhang, and if there isn't enough add a spacer in back. |

The following assumes that the cassette itself is loose, and not the freehub body/hub connection.

Is there a thin spacer available?

Yes, spacers of 1-2mm for behind cassettes are a fairly staple item these days. Certainly any shop that sells Mavic wheels will have them since all of these need them. Stop in any decent shop, or search for them on the net.
Thanks, I'll get a couple tomorrow! |
A bit of well-bent coathanger will do it in a pinch. Use the hook; it's already curved.
