Proofhide Brooks bartape? Really?

I read this somewhere. Is this something that should be done?
Sounds like it would be bad for the adhesive strips inside.

From Brooks website:

Q > Does your bar tape need Proofide?
A > No, no, no!!
Q > What happens if you do Proofide your bar tape (as I did after wrapping it)?
A > It won't harm, but it probably gets sticky
Q > What maintenance if any is required for tape, if not Proofide? Would Armor All leather wipes be okay?
A > No maintenance is required
Q > I live in the Pacific North West (Seattle), how will the saddle and leather bar tape hold up in our wet weather?
A > As for the tape, be sure the tape is wrapped very tightly and properly. Then you may also use Proofide From time to time.

If you use it on a utility bike , you apparently have money to burn.

It's on my commuter/recreational road bike.
No money to burn.
