RD not shifting to largest cog

Tightened the cable. That got it into the gear once. But I noticed the hangers were in danger of hitting the spokes, so I tightened the screw labeled 'L' on the RD. Now it will not shift into that gear again.

Loosen the L screw half of what you tightened.

Tried that.

Eh?

I have tightened the chain tension screw about four times. Now it is shifting into gear (and staying), however, the hangers can still be pushed into the spokes if you push the shift lever down far enough.

If you cant adjust the limit screw in such a way that you are able to get into the biggest cog without hitting the spokes with your deraliuer, it's likely either your deraliuer is bent or the derailuer hanger is bent.

Well I have gotten it to the point where it shifts into that last gear (and stays) when the lever is at about 3/4 extension. Not sure if this is normal. If I push beyond that, it then goes into the spokes. Probably not as intended, aye?

Also, I have not tested this on a ride again yet, but only with the bicycle upside-down.

edit: BTW, that repair walkthrough doesn't help me. I never look at Park Tool's repair blog, because they all require fifty-billion tools that I don't have.
