Lacing used hubs
 

I recently bought a set of vintage Record hubs, which I plan to lace up soon. My question is, the hubs have indentations were it was laced before. Is it best to lace the spokes as they were laced before or should I move it up a hole? or does it not really matter?

Conventional wisdom is to re lace it in the same pattern.

I don't think it really matters. But I generally make the new spokes go the same way as the previous ones so minimize the number of "dents".
Just don't do radial spoking on older hubs. The flanges were not designed for it.

Hub is soft alloy, spoke is very hard stainless steel........shouldn't really matter a whole lot.

I always try to lace up as per original lacing on the hubs, however it can be hard when the original lacing pattern was done on a right handed rim and you are now lacing up a left handed rim. The spokes will be off by one hole on the non-drive side.

I wouldn't worry about it. I am more concerened about the pulling spokes being on the outside (spoke head in) than how the hub was used before I got to it.

there is really only one correct way to lace a hub, but you could deviate from the previous impressions by changing the # of crosses (you would need to recalc spoke length)
