Bottom Bracket - Missing spacer?
1 Attachment(s)
So, I helped my little sister pick up a Jamis Coda Comp, and I noticed an odd issue today.
It looks like the non-drive side bottom bracket is exposed. There's a heaping of grease on the crank spindle, and I can't help but worry that all kinds of dirt and grease are going to get in there. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=267071 Any thoughts? Thanks! |
The spindle should be greased on the non-drive-side where the crank arm goes on. If it isn't, you can get a creaking sound when you pedal. For that type of BB, I've never seen a shield of any kind. The BB is a cartridge, and it's not assembled like the older style BBs with cups, ball bearings, lock rings, and so forth. It looks like the ones you see here before it is installed.

Nothing wrong with that BB. That's what some modern BB's look like, you can carefully wipe that extra grease away if you really want to, just so it won't attract extra dirt. Carefully though, I have actually ruined a BB by running a rag through that space too often and pushing dirt into the bearings.
Old mechanic wisdom said to only carefully wipe excess junk away, but don't go overboard as bearings leak oil or grease and that actually helps push the dirt away from the seals. |
Oh, that's a relief. Thanks for the replies!
