Getting rid of grip shifters

Hello.

I have a 2002-2003 Schwinn Sierra Sport comfort bike that I bought in a LBS in 2003 when I lived in town. I've not ridden it much over the years, but I've ridden it enough to know that I do not like the grip shifters at all.

The grip shifters are SRAM 3.0 Gripshifts and I have a SRAM ESP (no other markings) rear derailleur. Front derailleur is Shimano C050. The bike has 3 chain rings on the front (marked SR Suntour XR120 PFF) and the rear cluster has 7 chain rings (marked Shimano Super Low 13-34t Mega Range).

The brakes are marked Radius and are direct-pull cantilever brakes.

I've tried to read as much as I can on the subject, but I'm kind of getting overloaded with new information. Would this set of shifters and brake levers work with what I have?

I know these aren't top of the line, but I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money on this bike.

If you are going to keep the SRAM ESP rear derailleur, then you must use a SRAM ESP/1:1 activation ratio rear shifter.
Using that set would require you to replace the RD. Shimano RD activation ratio (how far the cable is pulled with shifter movement) is 2:1.

Could you just replace the shifters and not the brake levers?

Go to your local bike coop and buy a set of 3x7 shifters and a rear shimano derailleur. You can use pretty much any common Shimano rear derailleur with a Shimano 3x7 shifter set.

I would imagine not paying much more than 10-20 dollars for both parts at a bike coop.

Thank you for the responses. Very helpful.

I'd like to replace the brake levers, too. The levers that are on there have a little bit of surface rust on the housings. I thought if I were removing the grips and shifters, I might as well just take care of the whole thing at the same time.

If your existing shifters are 3.0 Gripshifts than it means you already have a 1:1 RD. The only 7-speed 1:1 trigger shifers I know of are the SRAM X3. If you want to use Shimano shifters, you'll have to replace your RD.

Just out of curiosity, what is it about grip-shifters that you don't like? I sure like mine, even if they are a little noisy when shifting to higher gears. bk

They make it difficult for me to find a comfortable grip. I don't like to have the regular grip under one part of my palm and the shifter under the other part, no matter how small. I also have a tendency to miss the spot I'm looking for. They have been adjusted by the LBS mechanic and they shift smoothly, they just don't seem to work well for me.

If there is room on your bars you could slide the brakes and shifters further onto the bar and get some full length grips...

The bar isn't flat, so there isn't any room to move them in. This is essentially the bike I have with a few different components.

I thought about getting trekking bars, but I'm going to try to hold off on too many changes. I don't want to spend a bunch on this bike and then find out cycling for fun and exercise isn't really for me. If I find out I really enjoy it like I think I will, I'll be looking at a different bike for regular use.

Ahhh, bummer. I'd go with Bezalel's suggestion, then.

X.3 trigger shifters for $25.

I wouldn't go for new brake levers just cuzza rust. Just lube pivots with oil, lube barrel adjuster threads with grease and keep on truckin'.
