Getting bombed off the forum!
Anybody else here getting bombed with these pop-up ads on BikeForums (and nowhere else)?
I can't even type for a minute without the sound system getting kickedup to max and the pop-up page devouring half of my screen. I can close the rogue window, burt a minute later its the same oogiemovies ad or whatever it's called. Is this site really so desperate to sell out their content to such an offensive barrage? And I have my po-up blocker set at the highest level already. |
dddd, Just one way for these forums to pay for themselves. Just watch where your curser goes, there's a thing called rollover that doesn't require a left click to page.

Get an adblocker for your browser. I use AdBlock for Chrome, it's just a plugin that stops all the ads, banners and pop ups from appearing on pretty much all websites.
What browser are you using? |
*apologies. Just re-read your post.
Have you tries removing and re-installing your adblocker? |
OSX/Windows/Linux?
IE/Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Safari? i'd recommend OSX and Firefox. |
I've got IE, so used the tools to block "all pop-ups" as described in the "internet options".
Still getting the big pop-ups with the blocker on, but not at the moment. It's just crazy they'd do that, I mean who would use a site where such a loud, obnoxious interruption re-appears every minute or two? Even sillier, closing the window doesn't seem to matter, the same unwanted window comes right back. |

Nuke that turd from orbit. |
It is NOT IE that is the problem. I am running that & never a single pop-up shows up !
Download & run a very good spyware program , such as " Spybot." Your computer is probably full of junk ! |
PEBKAC, I'm thinking.

Or pay up and stop whining.

That's the right answer! |
I hate those popups that open when you just happen to scroll the pointer across them. Every once in while the forum seems to take on some of that style of ad, and then I spend half my time having to carefully route my mouse pointer past them all. One slip up, and I'm hosed. There are times I cut my visit short out of frustration.
The recent batch of Romney ads have been most annoying. |

*I will agree it is certainly not easy to find out how, but here is the link:
http://www.bikeforums.net/payments.php *Maybe that would be something the admins should look at..... It is actually the "Subscribe" button at the top of each page, but I would guess most people figure that is for subscribing to the current thread. It's actually easier to Google "Join BikeForums.net" than to figure it out from the home page. Twelve bucks a year, and look how much entertainment you get! |

I have paid! It must take a bit for the system to "learn" that and stop the ads.
Well worth it, imho. You all are a fantastic group to associate with. I may have heard about the pay option once in the distant past and then forgotten about it. It might be useful to keep the option more front-and-center. Perhaps change the "Subscribe" button to read "Paid Membership". That way members are subtly reminded of the option. And when one is ready, one will pay. |
Wrong Forum!!!
=8-) |
Ouch! My ears hurt.
|
THANK YOU! That was the best $3 I ever spent in my life. I was so tired of that F'ing Soma free bra ad. My boss would come around the corner: "What are you looking at?" Umm, ummm...
|
I've never had a problem at all. I use Firefox and have the pop-up blocker on. A feature that gets in the way once in a while, but is otherwise is absolutely necessary on many sites, not only here.
|
The type of ads depends a lot on the country from where you're browsing. I'm in Finland, and the ads I see are very benign and some are actually helpful.
FWIW, I use Chrome. |
IE9 here. I'm having no problems with pop-ups or whatever is plaguing you, whether I'm logged in or logged out. On a practical note, it wouldn't be a bad idea to add a Tracking Protection List.
OSX/Windows/Linux? IE/Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Safari? i'd recommend OSX and Firefox. |
OK, officially, as far as adblockers go, etc, they are a violation of the Terms of Use, so I cannot advocate for their use, and at some future point, adblock active may well interfere with your ability to access the forums.
There is a Premium Level membership, too, that has no ads whatsoever. It's not all that expensive at $12 a year or $20 for 2 years. It does automatically renew, as well, fyi on that. You can upgrade at the "Subscribe" link button at the top of the forum, or go to http://www.bikeforums.net/payments.php. We accept major credit cards via the paypal network (No, you don't need to have a paypal account, but one will be created for the purpose when you do the transaction). As to the obnoxious rollover ads and popups, we are getting those slipped in on us via an adserver network, and we normally do not run this type of intrusive advertising. Please email me a screenshot to my forum email address, tom(at)bikeforums(dot)net, so I can forward them to traffic to be blocked. I'm closing and sticking this threaad for a few days, by the way, so it won't roll off the page. Email me the screenshots, though, so I can address the problem. |
