Mixing Shimano mtb and road components...?

I'm building up a bike with Shimano Ultegra 6600 shifters, 6600 derailleurs, 6600 chain, and a Tiagra 4650 50/34 crankset, 7800 bottom bracket.

Can I replace the shortcage 6600 rear derailleur with a 2012 Shimano Deore Shadow 10-Speed Rear Derailleur - RD-M593 SGS Long Cage?

Thanks!

teamtrinity, No. The RD uses a different pull ratio unique to the Dyna-Sys family.

The really simple answer for mixing and matching Shimano is as long as it is't Dyna-Sys it will work, although there may be some compatibility issues, see here for details http://www.shimano.com/publish/conte...ty%20Chart.pdf

If it's Dyna-Sys it won't work, so your idea of using the Deore M593 won't work.

What cassette were you planning to run, as you can use a GS RD to run up to a 32T cassette or an SS version upto 30t

Crap...I just did some reading. Apparently, Shimano 10-speed MTB rear derailleurs don't work with Shimano road groups. But 9-speed MTB rear should work?

So how about the RD M530? The techdoc has a 11-34 min-max cassette...do you think it'll work with a 36t rear?
