I need to disassemble a 2012 Giant Escape

I need to get the thing into a bike box so I can take it on a Greyhound. I was told I'd need to take off the rack, rear fender, front wheel, and handlebars. The handlebars are my main concern: am I going to need specialized tools or can I just take a hex key, loosen them up and pull them straight out?

Reassembly may also prove challenging. I would just do my homework or pay a guy at the bike shop to disassemble and pack the thing for me, but my budget is extremely low and I don't have a lot of time, nor a workspace.

I won't be able to provide frequent thread feedback, as I have lost my home and am currently using a library computer to post.

Please advise.

If you have quill stem, note what this video does. I would lash the stem and bars to the top tube.

As for tools, I think you can get by with a couple of Allen keys (5 and probably a 6mm) for the stem and seatpost. Also a 15mm wrench will usually take care of the pedals. Can't think of anything else. A small block of wood, 10 cm, for the fork would also be useful.

If you library is anything like my local library they should have plenty of bicycle repair books. Since you do not have full access to a computer I would go to the books they have for help. The books will help you if you forget anything that was covered in the video, in thread no. 2. When you get to the pedals don’t forget that the pedal on the left side (non chain side) of the bike is Left hand thread. With left hand thread you need to turn the wrench clockwise to remove. Some pedals come off with an Allen wrench and some use and open end wrench. If yours uses an open end wrench then a normal open end wrench will most often be too thick to go between the crank arm and the pedal. To save from having to buy a special pedal wrench, you will have to file or have someone grind the wrench down thin enough to fit. Remember, Left hand thread, turn as if you were tighten a normal thread to loosen it. I don’t know what the bus carriers charge for bike boxes but Amtrak Train charges $15.00. Ask around and you might even find one for free. I know years ago when I would carry my bike on Delta they never reused a bike box but threw it away.

I think the others have pointed you in the right direction regarding disassembly. Be sure to pad the places where parts may bum into each other when you pack the bike. Also get a scrap of wood or plastic, and cut it to the inside width of the fork, and put a nail in each end to keep the the fork from getting bent or crushed in transit. Every bike comes with a plastic fork spacer which is thrown out, so if you ask nicely a local shop will give you one.

When you arrive at your destination, look for a local bike co-op. Here you can find a cheap, decently tooled wokspace, along with people to help you along the way.

We've got a few 12 Escapes at home. The stem has a removable faceplate. All you need to take of the bars is a allen wrench. Actually, I think that's all you need to do the entire bike. Good luck
