Will a Shimano downtube friction shifter work in a Dia Compe friction Barcon Pod?

My Dia-compe friction Barcon shifter broke while I was "adjusting" it. Does anyone know if a Shimano ratcheting friction only downtube shifter will install into the pod/hub from the Dia-Compe?

It seems like it might work, but I've read that the older shimano levers don't work with Paul Thumbies and this might be a similar setup.

Thanks.
Brian

You'd need to do some serious customization. Of the various alternative options, it would probably be cheapest to just pick up another Suntour shifter for your pod. I used to have one kicking around I'd give you, but I think I gave it to the local co-op.

I assume you mean you have a Sun Tour barCon lever. What broke? The pawl, spring, stripped a nut?

The design of shift levers and their housings (as in how they are attached to the frame/bars) tend to be unique within a brand and series.

But there are SunTour BarCons on EBay pretty much all the time. Or go into the oldest LBS that actually fixes bikes and look through their used boxes. Andy.

Friction-friction levers may, but you need the square hole stop-plate too..

If you mean like this...

Then the answer is yes. No modifications necessary.

There is a tab on the stop plate of the downtube shifter that isn't on the the bar-end shifter. That tab sticks up and will poke into your palm a little. If you don't wear gloves, you can feel it. I rode with it for a year until a bar-end plate showed up in my parts bin. The plates are interchangeable.
