New to STI
I have been wrenching my own bikes for over 40 years, but this is the first bike I've owned with shimano sti shifters. I am trying to fine tune them with little success. I did a google search, but did not come up with much. Anyone got step by step instructions, or know where I can find something like that. And on a semi related topic. Also new to a 10 speed cassette, heard a new terml, cross chaining. compact double up front, so how many cogs on the lower end of the cassette are cross chaining with the small ring up front and vice versa?

The limit screws and B-screw settings are the same as they always were. The key to trimming is to do it based on the 2nd or 3rd high gear sprocket. You can't use the high gear sprocket because the cable is slack and the trim depends on the limit screw (just as always).
Cross-chaining likewise is unchanged. You want to ride on aligned combinations as much as possible. Cross-chaining isn't digital, as in some combinations are OK, and others aren't. Just keep in mind where you are, and avoid using the most crossed combinations. One issue that doe's uniquely affect 10s vs older systems is clearing the big ring when riding small with the outer rear sprockets. The chainrings are closer together, and so more sensitive to the chain's angle when coming from the outside. How much this limits small/small pairings depends on the chainline, the difference in chainring size, and chainstay length. You'll know when it's an issue, and make a mental note to avoid thoes pairs.

For adjusting index-shift deraillers, check out YouTube... A movie can be worth a jillion words.
One in particular, by an Australian, was very helpful to me. It is older, and poor video quality by today's standards but it helped me a bunch.
Lithe biggest point is that you need to start from scratch and set the limit screws, then the deraillers cable tension. Don't skip any steps and you will be done in no time.
The park tool site has excellent instructions too.
