Cable Caps

Hi all,

This is a newbie question.

What do you call those end caps that fit onto the ends of brake and shifter cables to prevent fraying? And what is a good source for buying them? (Online, surely?) My local bike shop charged me 25 cents apiece, which seemed rather steep. That was from their shop supply; they don't sell them as an item and there were none included in the shifter cables I bought.

You'd think a handful of these things would only be a couple of bucks!

Thanks.

I would go to a different shop. Every bike shop I use includes the cable tips free when I buy cables, also the ferrules free when I buy housing. You can buy the cable tips in a bottle of 200# for $10. E.g. https://www.niagaracycle.com/index.ph...45_4502_450202

I bought a few the last time I ordered something from Bike Friday - they charge 6 cents each for them:

So you are going to change shops because they "ripped you off" for 25 cents? The fact is bike shops dont get them for free so to pay for them is not unusual.

You only need four to a bike so even at 50 cents it's only $2.. but most bike shops include them with the cables.

But you can order them on ebay for a couple bucks for a dozen if it bothers you.

If you Solder the end of the cable, before cutting (proper cutter) the cap is redundant,
but that is, perhaps, a bit past noob tech., particularly if you use stainless cables..
