Halo sas 48h on a hardrock?
 

Hello all, as i had completely destroyed my back wheel on my hardrock I am looking to buy something strong and i have been looking at the 10mm cro-mo axle 48h halo sas back wheel. I have been wondering, will this wheel fit on my hardrock fine? Please let me know asap as I am looking to buy the wheel as soon as possible.

Okay, when you say you've destroyed your back wheel, I take it you've trashed the rim? Or busted spokes? What was the failure mode?

A 48h eyeleted rim should be pretty damn tough, but build quality is the single most important component of a wheel... I'd be interested to see what sort of riding a well-built, beefy 36h OCR couldn't survive.

What do you weigh? How large a tyre do you use, at what pressure? What are you doing on this thing?

I managed to bend the rim in 3 places, its impossible to true :P I'm looking at these Halo SAS wheels as I've heard only good things about them and as they are DH wheels they should be pretty bombproof. I weigh about 245lb I was using the tyres which come with the bike 26x2.0 and I used them at (dont kill me please :c) 70psi, bit too high. I mainly go cross-country a bit of commuting but I like to move fast and love the hills in the woods :P

So will this axle fit on my qr rear end?

Gee, you're kinda hefty; 48h sounds like it could be a good idea. At least you're not doing crazy stuff like big jumps or whatever...

Although you should be able to get away with lower pressures, especially if you go tubeless or wider still; should be a bit easier on the rim (as long as you don't bottom out the tyre).

Before getting a whole new wheel, if you can find a heavier rim with a similar ERD, that might be worth a shot... just tape the rim next to the old one and move the spokes over. Crank the spokes up really tight. If you're painstaking about it, it's not that hard to do a better job of building a wheel than most of the ones you'd buy...

But the 48h would almost certainly survive with all else being equal, if it's built okay.

Your Hardrock is a 26", right? The only other considerations are the OLD (it'll be 135mm on both) and the disc mounting (splined or 6 bolt, not a dealbreaker).

Should be good to go. Although I'd consider replacing the solid axle with your old QR one (if both hubs are a normal type), because otherwise you'll probably need a socket rather than a spanner to do up the drive side nut, and the solid axle is probably overkill.

I don't trust changing the axle, if it fits then it's all good I don't really need QR, too many irish travellers around here I was planning to change to security allen key axle anyway. Also, as long as I can take the tool around with me to take the back wheel off then it's all good :) What sort of nut do you think it comes with? For an allen key?

15mm hex. Depending on the chainstay/seatstay, you might have a hell of a time with a normal wrench what with the derailleur... fitting and removing the wheel might also be a pain, but see how you go.

QR axles are 10mm too, which leads me to assume the distinction just means solid and nutted like a BMX or single speed, track bike, fixie, etc.

Nope. How do you imagine that might be possible? You're talking about skewers.

Also, that's not a plain axle, so if you want the anti-theft you'll have to get it with a QR axle if that's an option. Swapping it out for a random one won't do, by the look.
