Many non-turning barrel adjusters are sized to take the cable with no ferrule, or with a factory crimped on version. Brake cables don't necessarily need a ferrule, and if the housing fits the adjuster nicely without, that's the way to set it up.

OTOH, there are brake ferrules with walls of less than 1/2mm which will correctly fit a 5mm brake cable into a 6mm fitting. That's the key, matching the cable diameter to the fitting for a stable no wobble fit.

Ferrules fit in my 74xx calipers but not my 77xx calipers. Doesn't matter. They both work.
